Blankenberge is a town and municipality in the Belgian province of West Flanders as well as being a dedicated member of the SARCC project, combating climate change and the effects thereof, improving and maintaining sea defences whilst using nature based solutions to spear head this movement.
Vlissingen is a municipality in the southwest of the Netherlands, known for it's popular tourist attractions and unique coastline, being the only city on the Dutch, Belgian or French North Sea coast facing southwest. As an active project partner within the SARCC project, Vlissingen is responsible for a pilot on their coastline, reducing the risk of flooding within their city by raising the dikes and building a water retention area. Gravelines is a project partner within the SARCC project located between Dunkirk and Calais, responsible for a pilot along their coastline, strengthening existing dunes. In order to achieve this the team at Gravelines began developing a simple system that simply traps sand, reinforcing the thickness and stability of the dune, making a more effective sea defence. Introducing: Exo Environmental who provide consultancy services for integrated sediment and water management with an emphasis on ecology and sustainability.
Tu Delft is a key SARCC project partner and University, responsible for developing an implementation by design and assessing the framework by learning from and working with the seven SARCC pilots. Watch the video to find out more.
At the Flemish Government's department of environment & spatial development (DESD) we are working in collaboration with SARCC and the province of West-Flanders, in order to help develop integrated coastal zone management. With the help of SARCC we intend to continue demonstrating the possibilities and added values of Nature Based Solutions at the coast.
Maritime & Coastal Services (MDK) is a division of the Flemish Agency, responsible for coastal protection, management, and infrastructure in the 4 coastal marinas, as well as providing hydrographical services. Within the SARCC project, MDK are implementing nature based solutions on a higher level in close cooperation with 2 coastal communities: Oostende and Middelkerke.
Middelkerke is an international seaside resort, where many visitors each year spend their summer. The town is hosting one of SARCC's new pilot projects as part of the new spatial development plan for a more resilient and sustainable city.
Oostende is a project partner in the SARCC project responsible for a pilot testing innovative nature based solutions on the Flemish coast.
HZ University of Applied Sciences is a key SARCC project partner and university located in Vlissingen and Middelburg in the Netherlands. Within the SARCC project HZ has been developing unique solutions to coastal flooding caused by climate change, with major socio economic, sustainable and environmental potentials.
The university of Vives focuses on smart, sustainable and resilient technologies, as well as implementing applied research with expertise in sustainable techniques and eco-design. In collaboration with the SARCC project Vives aims to combat climate change whilst using nature based solutions.
